Escape to the northern hilly terrain at this spectacular retreat. Every year adventure junkies from India and abroad visit Rishikesh for the most thrilling activities like river rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking and many more.
The Beatles sought spiritual enlightenment in Rishikesh, a Himalayan mountain town on the banks of the Ganges. These days, it’s a white-water-rafting hub, offering more physical highs
SWEPT overboard by the churning rapids of the Ganges River, our rafting mate struggled in his life jacket and helmet to get back to our boat, terror flashing in his eyes. I sat closest to his flailing hands and the rest of the rafting group shouted for me to get a hold of him.
The minute I heard the emerald waters of the Ganga gurgle beneath and the mountains stare me in the eye, I knew I was in love. At Atali Ganga, you don’t look out for nature. You’re with it all along. A casual yet carefully laid out patio with a bonfire and conversation tables greets you with earnest. I say conversation tables because well, with a stunning view you can sit here all day and talk about anything under the sun. Or the starry night sky that lights up, a la fairy lights. Bet Van Gogh would make art out of this one.
Green Hotelier Winner: Vaibhav Kala/Atali Ganga. Owned by Aquaterra Adventures, Atali Ganga is surrounded by reserved forest, 30 kms from Rishikesh. Atali Ganga is designed and build with local construction material to minimise use of high-energy materials.

On his 40th birthday, my marathon-running husband was presented with the chance to participate in the Himalayan Adventure Challenge (HAC). I watched him struggle up steep slopes, nearly fall off cliffs on his bike, and freeze on his raft. It looked beyond my worst nightmare. And then his team won.
