Family & Beginner Rafting at Atali Ganga
"Is this safe for my kids?" and "I have never rafted before, will I be okay?" are two different questions, and Atali Ganga has a real answer for both, not just a reassurance.
The two options: rafting and kayaking
Rafting is the signature Ganga run: 24km from Marine Drive to NIM Beach, 4 to 5 hours, open to ages 14 to 65, ₹3,540 per person including GST. It is faster-paced and genuinely active.
Inflatable kayaking is the gentler option built for families and first-timers: open to guests aged 6 and up, ₹1,062 per person, structured as a kayaking beach visit with tea or coffee, where guests paddle individually for short guided turns over 2 to 3 hours. If you are travelling with younger kids, or an adult in the group would rather watch than paddle a full river run, this is the one to book.
Mixed-age families often split the day: older kids and adults do the full rafting run while younger children do kayaking, or the whole group does kayaking together at a gentler pace.
You do not need to know how to swim
This is the single most common worry for first-timers, and the honest answer is: it does not matter. Every guest, on both rafting and kayaking, wears a PFD (life jacket) at all times on the water, including while entering and exiting the boat. A trained guide with safety-kayaker support is present on every trip, so swimming ability is not a requirement to participate.
What actually keeps beginners safe
Before anyone gets in a raft or kayak, there is a full safety briefing: how to fit a PFD, how to enter and exit the craft, paddling and hand signals, what to do in a capsize, what to do if separated from the group, and where the radio, phone and first aid are kept.
On the water, Atali Ganga's river team (Aquaterra Adventures) maintains a minimum 1:6 staff-to-participant ratio, well beyond what basic regulation requires, and every trip carries a dedicated safety kayaker in addition to the main guide. Any activity beyond Class 2 rapids requires sign-off from the Operations Director before it runs — it is not left to a call on the river. If conditions are not right on the day, the activity is cancelled rather than run anyway.
This isn't a one-off standard: Aquaterra Adventures has been running Himalayan river, trek, and camp journeys since 1995, and Atali Ganga's river guides carry real certifications — Wilderness First Responder, Swiftwater Rescue Technician, Basic and Advanced Mountaineering Courses among them — not a seasonal contract crew.
Planning a family trip
Online enquiries need at least 2 days notice; for anything within 24 hours, the river team can be reached directly on WhatsApp. If you are unsure which option fits your group, the team will help you decide based on ages, comfort with water, and how active a day you actually want.
